Most people think as a coach I must have had my whole life figured out. The truth is, I have been lost SO many times in my own career. In college, I knocked on my advisor’s door each semester, announcing a new major. I wasn’t sure what was realistic and what was a good match, I just knew two things:
- I wanted to help others
- I wanted to make money because growing up in a low-income household was no fun.
My first job was a cold call sales job. Surprisingly, I kicked butt and doubled my salary during the recession. At the age of 22, I made $75K on a liberal arts degree in Arizona but I was miserable and quit before my raise went into effect. Lesson #1: Don’t just chase the money. Confused and frustrated, I decided to walk into a staffing agency. I had no idea what a recruiter was then, but was quickly mesmerized by a lady telling me she was willing to help me find a job. I ended up getting hired internally that day, and for 6 years I recruited, headhunted, and onboarded employees across Fortune 500 companies and Silicon Valley startups. While things were comfortable, I had a deeper desire to help people who truly needed help. You see, as a recruiter we’re looking for the most marketable talent, and that often meant rejecting those that really needed a job.
